WELCOME TO THE CAREER & PLACEMENT OFFICE

General Objectives

VMA Career and Placement Office aims to achieve the 100% employment rate of its completers and graduates within a year after completing classroom instructions and graduation that also completed with various trainings and programs that molds them to reach the standards of the companies or linkages. It prepares the students for the upcoming recruitment of the companies most especially with the interviews and examinations by the help of reviews and orientation program. It also enhances the guidelines by a set of rules and principles, strives to maintain good relationship with companies.

Policies


  • POLICY ON DEPLOYMENT
    The CAP Office shall ensure that the deployment rate requirements shall be determined by computing the percentage of OBT deployment based on the total number of students who completed the classroom instruction (CCI) for OBT in a particular class.
    However, students who opted not to pursue or undertake the required OBT for whatever reason shall not be included in the computation of the percentage of deployment.
    They are advice to come at the school with their parents to sign an Affidavit of Undertaking / Agreement prepare by the school. Student and Parents shall be required to execute a duly notarized Affidavit of Undertaking stating clearly the reason(s) for not pursuing such requirement.
    Once the Cadets / Cadettes and Parent signed the Affidavit of Undertaking, that particular Cadet / Cadette shall be deducted to the total list to be monitored for the OBT programs for particular year he/she graduated from the CCI.
  • POLICY FOR THE MONITORING AND TRACING OF OBT
    The Career and Placement Office shall establish a system in monitoring students undergoing OBT
    The CAP Office shall include in Pre-job orientation seminar on how to create an account and to register. The guest speaker appointed by Maritime Administration shall orient the students on how to create an account to register the details of the students in the MISMO portal of the Maritime Administration, for monitoring purposes.
    The CAP Head shall ensure that the objective evidence has performed while undergoing OBT. Monthly Progress Report shall be prepared by the CAP Head on the result of monitoring.
  • POLICY FOR CAREER ORIENTATION
    The CAP Office shall ensure that the orientation shall be conducted by CAP Head and OTS, it includes in the Pre-Job Orientation how to fill out the Training Record Book (TRB), Daily Journal, OTG and Sea Project works.
    The CAP Head will set the schedule date of Pre-job Orientation& TRB Workshop Seminar before the end of the second semester. In Pre-job Orientation, the topic for discussion related to OBT requirements includes the following:
    1. Processing of TOR
    2. Create and register MISMO Portal/Account
    3. BT & SDSD Training and COP
    4. Processing of Seaman’s book (SIRB)
    5. Processing of Passport
    6. Stress Management
    7. Updating and Refresher course
    8. Remediation Programs
    9. Master has the following responsibilities: .1 designate the Shipboard Training Officer; .2 evaluate students' performance onboard before affixing signature in the TRB and the DJWD; and .3 issue the Certificate of Sea Service (Annex H-7) indicating, among others, the actual duration of training onboard.
    10. Shipping/Manning Company
           Shipping/manning company which provides onboard training to students shall be responsible to:
                - provide shipboard training berth; and
                - facilitate the issuance of a Certification (Annex F-6) to students upon completion of the OBT indicating, among others, the actual duration of onboard training.
    In Workshop Seminar includes the following;
    1. How fill up the Training Record Book (TRB)
    2. How fill up the Daily Journal
    3. Sea work Project
    4. Onboard Training Guidance (OTG   Student’s responsibility to:
           - follow diligently the approved OTG for the whole duration of the onboard training;
           - keep the Training Record Book and Daily Journal of Watchkeeping Duties properly filled-up; and
           - prepare and gather all objective evidences of having performed the required sea projects and operational tasks.

    10. Medical requirements
    For cadets who missed the Pre-Job and TRB Workshop Seminar, orientation on the TRB processing will be given.
    1. Valid reason or proof of Medical certificate
    2. Schedule for one on one orientation work shop seminar
    3. Conduct group orientation work shop seminar
  • PRE-JOB ORIENTATION SEMINAR
    Pre-job orientation seminar is an activity that will assist the graduating students in their preparation for pre-job requirements before boarding a vessel. This activity will guide our graduates of what to do, what documents to prepare and equipped them to become wholesome Filipino seafarers in the future. (NOTE: A special session will be conducted for those students who missed this activity.)
    Topics that are included during pre-job orientation seminar are:
    1. School Requirement (TOR, CAV, CCI cert., Engine & Deck watch keeping cert.)
    2. Seaman’s Book Requirement
    3. Processing of Passport Requirement
    4. Birth Certificate Endorsement/Authentication
    5. Seamen Member Coverage/Benefits
    6. How to create and register in MARINA MISMO account
    7. Orientation for the Maritime Students regarding embarkation requirements and documents; Annex F, JCMMC No. 1, Series 2023.
    8. Training Record Book for Deck and Engine (TRB).
    9. Daily Journal requirement.
    10. Onboard Training Guidance (OTG)
    11. Enrollment of required Seagoing Service prior to embarkation
    12. Structured and Unstructured cadetship program.

  • POLICY FOR STUDENTS PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT: MOCK INTERVIEW, REVIEW AND TUTORIAL
    Mock Interview

    The CAP Office ensures that the students are well prepared before the scheduled visit of shipping companies to the school. The students are obliged to participate in the mock interview to be arranged by the office. The students will be rehearsed and guided prior the actual interview of shipping companies. Students who can not join the mock interview are advised to secure a letter of affidavit, otherwise, their parents will be called upon.
    The CAP has the authority to endorse the most qualified candidates to shipping company.

    Review and Tutorial
    The CAP office will design and develop learning strategies to enhance and develop the competence of the students. The office is expected to arrange the review and tutorial schedules for BSMT and BSMAR-E.
  • POLICIES FOR CAREER AND PLACEMENT OFFICE RELATED PROGRAMS IN ARRANGING AND INITIATING APPRENTICESHIP OF CADETS
    The CAP Office will facilitate MOA or Certifications with Shipping Companies and provide scholarship and placement cadetship program with shipping company linkages. Organize and make arrangements for shipping company to visit VMA, assist in the qualifying exam and interviews for scholarship and placement cadetship for job placement. Provide shipping company list of qualified cadets to undergo written and oral exam based on companies’ criteria and requirements. The DEAN’S office will schedule the review for Math and Physics in order to increase passing percentage in written and oral qualifying exams for the qualified students and cadets.
  • POLICIES FOR THE SELECTION OF SHIPPING COMPANIES INVOLVED IN ONBOARD TRAINING OF VMA GRADUATES CADET
    The CAP Office in collaboration with OTO shall ensure that the VMA graduates for BSMT & BSMAR-E for the selection of different shipping companies and identifying required standards of shipping companies of local and international regulating bodies. The CAP Office and OTO verify and ensure that the Shipping Company in recruiting cadets for OBT is listed in POEA approved list and shipping company is ISM certified. It includes verified shipping company the list of Companies with established linkages or partners. It ensures to establish linkage with Company Training Officer to monitor performance of cadets (STCW Deck and Engine). Established and updates record of shipping company. Verify from the recruiting shipping companies their standard requirements in the selection of cadets for OBT. Inform qualify cadets of company’s standard requirements and the date of qualifying exam and the final interview conducted by shipping company.
