Mangroves: Trees of Life

Mangroves are ecologically and economically important because they harbour and support a variety of commercially important fauna such as fish, crabs, and shrimps among others. It does not only prevent coastal and riverbank erosion caused by typhoons and strong waves but also protects property and livelihood from storm impacts. This study was conducted to determine the importance of mangrove to the local residents of Brgy. Punta Taytay, Bacolod City.

"Our environment in its pristine form is aesthetically beautiful and pleasing to behold" (Sampson, 1996). Most of the residents of Barangay Punta Taytay rely on the sea for livelihood through fishing, oyster production, sea products and beach resort operation. All ifwhich suffer when the sea gets polluted.

Disposal of garbade in the world is a problem that continues to grow with the development of industrialized nations and the growth of population. inadequate solid waste management systems have posed serious health risks particularly in densely populated areas. Sacvenging for recycable material iscommon throughtout many parts of the philippines. one of the social issues in Barangay punta Taytay isproper waste disposal considering that it isa coastal area.
